KALIAKRENSKI LTHO, GPS 43°21.72'N; 028°27.94'E
The lighthouse of Cape Kaliakra was opened on 15 July 1866. It was built by the Collas &Michel Company. It is a white stone tower with white buildings at its base. The lighthouse was affected by the 1901 earthquake and the tower was rebuilt. Today it is 10 m high and 68 m above the sea surface.
Between the two world wars, by decision of the Romanian authorities, a radio beacon was installed with a transmitter "Marconi W.B.1." The radio beacon then transmitted in good weather the letter "Z" in alternating intervals with pauses of silence, the entire cycle being 20 minutes. The optics and transmitter are powered by electricity from an in-house power station.
In 1955 a "Gaselan" receiver was installed and in 1961 a radio beacon. They operated until 2004. Since 1987 the optics and the clockwork have been replaced. An optic type 'ASA-500M' was installed.
Today the characteristics of the beacon are: white, flashing light, with a frequency of 5 sec (light - 0.5 sec, dark - 4.5 sec), with the sector of action is 360º. The signal is visible at a distance of up to 21 nautical miles.
